Abstract
Persian literature—one of Iran’s richest and oldest cultural heritages—plays a pivotal role in shaping national and cultural identity. Persian poetry, with its aesthetic refinement and profound meanings, has long attracted devoted audiences. As the younger generation and the country’s future leaders, university students are vital to preserving and promoting this heritage. The present study examines the extent of students’ interest in and reading of Persian poetry and literature and its relationship with cultural identity. Employing a survey design and a structured questionnaire, the research targeted students at Shahed University (Tehran). The sample was selected using random sampling procedures, and recognized statistical tests were used to ensure validity and reliability. Findings indicate that 43.4% of respondents reported a moderate level of interest in Persian literature, while 4.7% reported very low interest. Overall, students’ interest in poetry and literature was above the mid-point; however, actual reading of poetry was lower than expected. Perceived contributions of literature to promoting human ethics and aesthetic dispositions were reported by 79.03% and 77.40% of respondents, respectively. Moreover, 88.74% reported enjoyment when reading a poem, and 72.55% expressed empathy with fictional protagonists. To strengthen and expand this interest, the study recommends initiatives such as poetry-reading and literary critique sessions, upgrading library holdings, short courses and workshops, cultural and artistic activities, and structured reading programs related to Persian literature.
