Abstract
Due to the emergence of economic crisis in Indonesia, the claims of sociopolitical groups in creased here. Ethnicity also resulted in the rise of several requests ranging from local self determination and federalism to seperation during the current era. Consequently, and with the help of the United Nations as well as other regional and international bodies, the region of the Eastern Timor was seperateal from the country. Additionally, a morer or less similar trend is being developed in other regions, particularly in Achea, Irian Jaya and Molaccas, which can impair the national unity of Indonesia.
Taking into account the recent events in the country, the author traces back the crisis roots both at the domestic and foreign levels. Domestically, the issues of ethnic heterogeneity, ethnic policies of the Suharto’s regime, and conditions as well as consequences of the transformation period are considered. At the external level, the conspiracy theory, role of the internatonal community, the impacts of western efforts and the economic crisis are examined.
Resorting to the six above - mentioned factors, the author emphacises the multidimensional causes of the solidarity crisis in Indonesia. The article is concluded with some lessons from the national solidarity crisis in Indonesia, which in turn include the introduction of the findings replete with prescriptive approaches.
