Abstract
In the long history of humanity, the question of identity of persons and nations are one of fundamental concerns of human beings. This concern has appeared strongly in modern period. In recent years, the identity crisis of students and youths has attracted attention of Iranian scientists seriously. Inspiring national identity on childhood, especially in elementary level, is one of crucial methods of reinforcing national identity. So, educational books and materials can play a significant role in reinforcing elements of national identity and encouraging national zealotry.
According to the importance of text books in national identity of students, this survey using a content analysis methodology, examined the frequency of words, images, poems, fictions, and prose in Farsi text books of elementary levels and compared them to the elements of national identity. Findings revealed that the rate of attention to national identity elements is about 7% of text books` content. Based upon the findings of this research, some recommendations are provided to reinforce national beliefs via text books.
