Elements and Symbols of Islamic Identity in Iranian Carpet

Abstract
Certainly, an important part of Iranian identity is rooted in Islamic Civilization and Islamic identity be manifested and appeared in the elements, ideas, teachings and beliefs of Islam and Shiite. Carpeting art is one of the native and applied arts that with using of the symbols, concepts and Islamic themes, especially Shiite worldview, including epiphany of the heaven and its elements (trees in the garden scene, and vegetable and plant motifs), religious teachings (holy and prophetic verses and sayings), visual narratives (visiting Imam Ali (aS) from patients, the Prophet's Ascension), the scene of Ashura, visual icons of Prophet and imams (aS), invocations and prayers attributed to Shia in inscriptions and literature (Nadeali prayer, Ziarat-e-Ashura), as well as is the representative of the Islamic identity. This article with selecting fifteen carpets which have icons, concepts and themes of Shiite and Islam, analyzes the Islamic identity and its associated elements in these Iranian carpets.
