Abstract
The present article is an attempt to elaborate on the main indices of Iranian identity through relying on the History of Sistan and the role the Saffarids played in its revival after the attack of the Arabs. According to the History of Sistan, the Saffarids through their sagacity and insight made a distinction between Arabism and Islam and hence succeeded in reviving the Iranian identity which had its roots in the culture and civilization of ancient Iran on the one hand and the teachings of the new religion on the other.
